BELLEVUE RESIDENTS INVITED TO SIGN UP FOR 'SEEDLINGS IN THE CITY'

October 29, 2009

Stites & Harbison Sponsoring Planting of 100 Seedlings

Stites & Harbison, PLLC is hosting its second annual ‘Seedlings in the City’ on Nov. 7 where volunteers will work to plant 100 trees at no cost to participating residents in the Bellevue area.

Bellevue residents who are interested in having a tree seedling planted in their yard are invited to register by contacting Becky Dan at
becky.dan@stites.com or (615) 782-2210. Volunteers are also needed to help with the planting. Dan is also interested in receiving feedback regarding future planting locations.

Stites & Harbison will provide American Elm seedlings, a tree that suffered great losses in the eastern United States in the mid-1900’s due to an outbreak of Dutch Elm disease. Silver Maple and Sugar Maple seedlings will also be available.

“These aren't just any trees,” explained Tara Aaron, co-founder of the project and an attorney with Stites & Harbison. “They're American Elm seedlings from a tree named 2008 Big Tree champion by The Nashville Tree Foundation.”

American Elms are prized for their lovely arching branches that provide shade, make homes more energy efficient and add beauty and value to neighborhoods. During the early 1900's, American Elms were found in great numbers gracing the eastern United States. Sadly, many trees were lost during the mid-1900's, due to the outbreak of Dutch Elm disease. While this disease affected some American Elms in Nashville, others survived and continued to grow into majestic, healthy trees.

“Stites & Harbison considers its involvement in the betterment of Nashville’s communities a priority,” said Aaron.  “We live and work here too. This is our hometown and we want to help make it the best it can be.”
